Rose of the Month ~ October
2002
Alba Semi-plena
As the season draws to a close here in the northern parts
of the country, we come to appreciate those roses blooming
into the cool weather. Most especially roses that are blooming
AND don't need to be buried, mounded or otherwise coddled
over the long winter. Alba Semi-plena is one of those roses.
Rated at 9.0 by the ARS, it really lives up to its score.
It is also known as the White Rose of York and was introduced
into the UK by invading Roman armies. Its pure white, 8 petaled
blooms have a sweet scent and its gray-green rugosa-like foliage
make an attractive, medium to large sized bush. Happy in the
colder climates, Alba Semi-plena doesn't fare well in the
south. Here though, it is a vigorous grower, repeating bloom
intermittantly all summer (although most sources say spring
or summer once bloom) and bears red hips in fall. As I look
about my garden at all the winter protecting to come, I am
happy to have two of these still blooming and ready to take
on the upcoming cold.
