Rose of the Month ~ August 2002

Robusta

This month's rose is Robusta. I was able to see it at Penny's last year and Darlene's this year, and it definitely showed itself to be hardy, disease resistant and quite a bloomer. But watch out for those thorns! Which, if you're creating a hedge for privacy might be a plus. Anyway, the bush is very vigorous and the blooms were lovely.

Robusta is a Hybrid Rugosa medium-red shrub bred by Kordes and introduced in 1979. It earned a whopping 9.5 rating from the ARS. It's a single, boasting 5 crimson red petals with yellow stamens and the blooms are large with a moderate fragrance. It's hardy to Zone 3 and is happier in the cooler climates. It generally grows 5-7' high and 3-4' wide. Take a look at photos from Penny and Darlene's gardens and rate this month's rose below...
